Welcoming a new baby into your home is one of life's most precious moments. Capturing those first days during an in-home newborn photo session is a great way to preserve authentic, heartfelt memories. Lifestyle and documentary photography focuses on natural beauty of your family and your home. You will only need to make small preparations to prepare for your session.

You just did the hard part mama, growing and birthing a baby! Let's not do a deep clean. Instead, declutter strategically. Tidy up the areas where the photos are going to be taken, such as the nursery, living room, or master bedroom. Don't worry about perfection! Open curtains and blinds to let in as much light as possible.

Feed and burp baby beforehand, and be prepared to feed again during the session if needed. Having a bottle on hand or being prepared to nurse is always helpful. A well fed baby is usually sleepy and relaxed. I remember if my baby still had a closed fist they weren't full. Their hands should open up and relax easily.

Adjust the temperature in your home to keep baby warm. This is especially important if baby will be photographed without clothing or in a swaddle. I know it gets warm and you don't want to sweat but ceiling fans often make babies cold.

Coordinate your outfi

ts. Simple is best! Neutral onesies, swaddle blankets or even no clothing at all are timeless choices. Avoid busy patterns and logos that are distracting. You'll want to compliment each other and your home's decor. Earthy colors, pastels and classic creams work well. It might be nice to have a few props such as delicate headbands or hats ready but you can always request your photographer bring a few.

Lastly, embrace the chaos and stay relaxed. Newborn photos are unpredictable and baby led. Whether you are rocking your baby, reading to a sibling, snuggling on the couch, these real and raw moments are what lifestyle photography is all about.

With a little planning and a lot of love, you'll create timeless memories to cherish for years to come.
